Use
Proscar is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPF) in men. This is where the prostate is enlarged and causes problems with urinating. The prostate is gradually reduced from its enlarged state, bringing relief to the patient. Proscar’s active ingredient Finasteride, is the same as in Propecia, but at a much larger dose. Proscar has 5mg Finasteride compared with Propecia’s 1 mg dosage. Cost-conscious consumers therefore purchase Proscar and divide the 5mg tablet, thereby enjoying the benefits of Propecia for about 1/4 the price of Propecia.
Dosage
Take Proscar at the same time each day. Proscar may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. Proscar may be crushed if difficult to swallow. The usual dose in men is one tablet taken once each day. Swallow Proscar with a glass of water. Follow all directions given to you by your doctor carefully. If you do not understand the instructions on the box, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help.
Side effects
Side effects are rare, however some that may occur while taking Proscar include a change in sexual function (less desire for sex, impotence or problems with ejaculation) or breast enlargement. If side effects continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following side effects or symptoms of toxicity: skin rash or swelling of lips.
Precautions
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Proscar. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you have or have had any medical conditions or if you have any allergies to any other medicines or any other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes. If you have not told your doctor about any of the above, tell them before you take any Proscar. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, or pregnancy. Use of this medicines is NOT recommended if you are female. Finasteride use is contraindicated in women when they are or may potentially be pregnant. Women should not handle crushed or broken Proscar tablets when they are pregnant or may potentially be pregnant because of the possibility of absorption of finasteride and the subsequent potential risk to a male fetus. Proscar tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets have not been broken or crushed.
